There are three main types of glass used in watches, plexi-glass, mineral glass and saspphire crystal glass. Plexi and mineral glass is what was predominantly used until the 1960s when sapphire crystal glass was introduced for watches. Although plexi-glass and mineral glass scratch easily, it can be polished to remove and scratches or surface-level marks. Sapphire crystal glass is very difficult to scratch as it is only susceptible to very hard rocks such as diamonds but it cannot be polished, the glass would need to be replaced.
